Survey of Spectrum Sharing for Inter-Technology Coexistence
نویسندگان
چکیده
Increasing capacity demands in emerging wireless technologies are expected to be met by network densification and spectrum bands open to multiple technologies. These will, in turn, increase the level of interference and also result in more complex inter-technology interactions, which will need to be managed through spectrum sharing mechanisms. Consequently, novel spectrum sharing mechanisms should be designed to allow spectrum access for multiple technologies, while efficiently utilizing the spectrum resources overall. Importantly, it is not trivial to design efficient spectrum sharing mechanisms, not only due to technical aspects, but also due to regulatory and business model constraints. In this survey we address spectrum sharing mechanisms for wireless inter-technology coexistence by means of a technology circle that incorporates in a unified, system-level view the technical and non-technical aspects. We thus systematically explore the spectrum sharing design space consisting of parameters at different layers. Using this framework, we present a literature review on inter-technology coexistence with a focus on wireless technologies with the same spectrum access rights, i.e. (i) primary/primary, (ii) secondary/secondary, and (iii) technologies operating in a spectrum commons. Moreover, we reflect on our literature review to identify possible spectrum sharing design solutions and performance evaluation approaches useful for future coexistence cases. Finally, we discuss spectrum sharing design challenges and suggest potential future research directions.

Spectrum sharing methods for the coexistence of multiple RF systems: A survey
Due to the explosive growth of wireless devices and wireless traffic, the spectrum scarcity problem is becoming more urgent in numerous Radio Frequency (RF) systems. At the same time, many studies have shown that spectrum resources allocated to various existing RF systems are largely underutilized. As a potential solution to this spectrum scarcity problem, spectrum sharing among multiple, poten...

This paper studies interference alignment scheme and minimum mean square error (MMSE) improvement in Internet of Things (IoT)-oriented cognitive systems, where IoT devices share the licensed spectrum by cognitive radio in spectrum underlay. Target to manage the inter-tier interference caused by cognitive spectrum sharing as well as ensure an MMSE at receivers, the interference alignment algorit...
متن کاملSpectrum Leasing in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Survey
Spectrum scarcity and underutilization in wireless networks, arising due to traditional static spectrum allocation, have been of great concern since the past decade. The suboptimal use of spectrum motivates new wireless concepts where unlicensed users opportunistically access licensed spectrum using cognitive radio technology. A cognitive radio can change its operating parameter intelligently i...
متن کاملCoexistence between Communications and Radar Systems - A Survey
Data traffic demand in cellular networks has been tremendously growing and has led to creating congested RF environments. Accordingly, innovative approaches for spectrum sharing have been proposed and implemented to accommodate several systems within the same frequency band. Spectrum sharing between radar and communications systems is one of the important research and development areas. In this...
متن کاملMedium Access Control in Cognitive Radio Networks
Cognitive radio (CR) is seen as one of the enabling technologies for realizing a new regulatory spectrum management paradigm, viz. opportunistic spectrum sharing (OSS). In the OSS paradigm, unlicensed users (a.k.a. secondary users) opportunistically operate in fallow licensed spectrum on a non-interference basis to licensed users (a.k.a. incumbent or primary users). Incumbent users have absolut...
